In the era of remote work, creating a home office that promotes productivity, health, and well-being is crucial. As a professional ergonomist, I understand the importance of designing a workspace that supports your body and mind. In this guide, we will explore key ergonomic principles to help you set up the perfect home office. If you'd like to dive into any of these topics in greater detail, schedule an assessment with me today! I'd be happy to help optimize your workstation for you.

Choose the Right Workspace
Start by selecting a dedicated area for your home office. Ideally, this space should be quiet, well-lit, and free from distractions. Consider factors such as natural light, ventilation, and room dimensions. Ensure that the chosen area allows you to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the day.
Invest in Ergonomic Furniture
A comfortable and supportive chair and desk are essential components of an ergonomic home office. Choose a chair that provides lumbar support, customizable seat height and depth, and allows you to sit comfortably for at least 30 minutes at a time. Your desk should allow for a comfortable arm position while providing enough space for your computer, keyboard, and other essentials. If you have the funds and plan to work from home for extended periods of time, I highly recommend investing in a height adjustable desk. The top of the line models will have programmable heights so that you can set it once and have it work for you for years to come.
Optimize Monitor Placement
Position your computer monitor at eye level to prevent neck strain. Use an adjustable monitor stand or adjustable arm to achieve the optimal height. Ensure that the screen is at a comfortable viewing distance, typically about arm's length away. Avoid placing the monitor in front of a window to minimize glare. If you're stuck working from a laptop, at the very least you should invest in an external keyboard so that you are able to lift the height of your laptop screen to a comfortable viewing angle.
Prioritize Keyboard and Mouse Ergonomics
Select an ergonomic keyboard and mouse that promote a natural hand and wrist position. Keep your keyboard and mouse close enough to the front edge of your desk to avoid unnecessary reaching. If you've got a mouse pad with a wrist support - throw it out! The space under your wrists should always remain free from contact with the desk, or any "supportive" pads.
Lighting Matters
Proper lighting is essential for reducing eye strain and maintaining focus. Position your desk so that it receives ample natural light during the day. If natural light is not available you can use task lighting to illuminate your workspace, just ensure that it is evenly distributed and free from harsh glare.
Organize Cables and Wires
Messy cables not only create a cluttered appearance but also pose a tripping hazard. Use cable organizers or clips to keep wires tidy and out of the way. This not only enhances the aesthetics of your home office but also contributes to a safer and more organized workspace.
Personalize with Plants and Art
Bring a touch of nature to your home office with indoor plants. Not only do they improve air quality, but they also contribute to a more pleasant and calming atmosphere. Consider adding artwork or decor that inspires and motivates you, creating a space that reflects your personality and that you enjoy spending time in.
Don't Forget to Move
It's crucial that you incorporate movement into your day often, whether its to get up for a cup of coffee, grab a snack, or refill your water during the day, the more you move the better you will feel at the end of your work day. If you can't get away as often as you'd like, try to suggest walking meetings. These are especially great for check-ins and one on one's where you might not need the visuals on the computer for the entire duration of the meeting.
Designing the perfect home office goes beyond aesthetics – it's about creating a workspace that supports your physical and mental well-being. By following these ergonomic principles, you can set up a home office that enhances your productivity, comfort, and overall work experience.
